Since the publication of his first book The Eleven Commandments of 21st Century Management Matthew Kiernan has focused on two essential aspects of success for organizations in today's business environment: innovation and sustainability. Ever the outspoken and passionate advocate for greater corporate accountability in the environmental realm, Matthew's message is deceptively simple - sustainability is good business. Best Practices Panel #1: Getting Your Employees Involved In Your Green Initiative

One of the key characteristics of green employers is the fact that they have harnessed the energy, innovation and enthusiasm of their employees in their efforts. This session will feature four of the winners whose efforts in this area offer an example for everyone on how to engage employees in greening the organization. Each of the organizations participating here have done an outstanding job of generating enthusiasm, new ideas and action on the environment among their employees. Their efforts in this area have thus served to reduce costs, burnish their brands and increase employee engagement. Each will share some of the secrets to their success to help you come up with ways you too can develop leading edge practices to green your workplace.

  • Lloyd Bryant, Vice-President and General Manager, Imaging and Printing Group, Hewlett-Packard (Canada) Co.

  • Ernie Springolo, Senior Country Representative, Bayer MaterialScience Division, Bayer Inc.

Optional Case Study Sessions

To hear in more depth about specific initiatives targeted at specific groups, this conference will offer you the opportunity to choose from a selection of focused sessions. These will give you the chance to hear first-hand from a single organization about their successful initiatives for making their workplace greener.

Choose one of the following two case studies:

Case Study I:
How Being a Green Workplace Can Help Support Your Employee and Customer Brands

Today's consumers increasingly demand that the organizations they patronize actively seek to reduce their environmental impact. At the same time prospective and current employees look to their employers to reflect and support their own environmental concerns. Thus the greening of the workplace offers a great opportunity for organizations to simultaneously enhance their employee and customer brand as well as creating greater synergy between the two. In this session two leading Canadian organizations will discuss their specific efforts in these two areas and the results they have seen and feedback they have received from employees and customers.

  • Kim Forgues, Vice President - Human Resources, The Home Depot

  • Brian Richardson, Vice President, Brand Marketing and Communications, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts

Case Study II:
The Role of An Enterprise Wide Commitment To "Green" in Becoming A Top Employer

Increasingly employees and customers have become aware of "greenwashing" where organizations try and gain profile for green initiatives without really changing how they do business or making serious investments. Organizations therefore need to ensure their efforts are sincere, effective and significant. This session will provide an in-depth look at how LoyaltyOne has embraced their commitment to social responsibility, from grassroots initiatives lead by associates, to external offerings now core to their business, all of which have contributed to their associates pride and engagement in the organization.

  • Debbie Baxter, VP Corporate Sustainability & Facilities Management & Chief Sustainability Officer, LoyaltyOne

12:30 p.m.
Luncheon Keynote: Environmental stewardship - is it all just hot air?

We all know that saving the environment is a good thing to do and companies are vying for green bragging rights. But what if there's more to it than that? What if it's not the environment that needs saving but us. Karen Clarke-Whistler, Chief Environment Officer at TD Bank will share her perspective on the business value of pursuing a greening strategy and will also share her belief in Canada's obligation to lead in this critically important field.

  • Karen Clarke-Whistler, Chief Environment Officer, TD Bank Financial Group

1:30 p.m.
Best Practices Panel #2: Going For Environmental Gold - Setting And Achieving Ambitious Carbon Reduction Goals

Many organizations have set themselves the goal of becoming carbon neutral, some have even achieved it. Others have opted instead for ambitious carbon reduction goals. Either way focusing on their carbon footprint is a great way for organizations to galvanize action, measure progress and publicize an easy to understand commitment to the environment. These organizations will share how they have translated a broad environmental commitment into concrete action that has resulted in reduced waste, lower costs and a dramatically reduced impact on the environment.

  • Alden Hadwen, Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, Aeroplan LP

  • Esther Speck, Mountain Equipment Co-op

  • Colleen Sparks, Director, Carbon Neutral Ops & Climate Outreach Climate Action Secretariat, BC Public Service

  • Tyler Smith, Director - Environmental Initiatives, SaskTel

Optional Case Study Sessions

To hear in more depth about specific initiatives targeted at specific groups, this conference will offer you the opportunity to choose from a selection of focused sessions. These will give you the chance to hear first-hand from a single organization about their successful initiatives for making their workplace greener.

Choose one of the following two case studies:

Case Study I:
How Green Construction Can Transform Your Workplace

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is currently in the midst of a $28 million facility renewal initiative, installing energy efficient lighting, upgrading heating and air conditioning systems, and adding state-of-the-art building automation systems -- with the aim of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by a projected 9,000 metric tons when complete. This initiative also includes the installation of an impressive solar photovoltaic array (the largest in the healthcare industry) that will be installed and architecturally integrated into an existing structure. As well as hearing about this impressive project this session will discuss smaller scale initiatives organizations can make that can help create greener workplaces.

  • Don Crichton, Senior Vice President - Practice Leader, Workplace Solutions, HOK Canada

  • Barbara Ciesla, Vice President - Leader, Sustainable Consulting, HOK Canada

  • Beverley Townsend, Manager, Environmental Sustainability, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

Case Study II:
Making a Large Scale Corporate Initiative Work

The Ontario government released its "Go Green Action Plan" in 2007, a framework for action to help the province reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, setting province-wide emission reduction targets, strategies for promoting more use of clean and renewable energy sources, and measures to reduce the carbon footprint of the province's industrial, transportation, municipal and residential sectors -- the plan is championed by the Climate Change Secretariat, who reports directly to senior levels of government This session will focus on the steps taken to support the action plan, and to ensure that the OPS is "walking the talk". The government established an in-house "Green Office" to oversee it's own efforts to reduce it's own environmental footprint. Topics covered in this discussion will include: Electronic waste diversion CO2 reduction targets Renewable energy Employee involvement Establishing the Green Fund for Innovative Technology to encourage the government's purchase and piloting of innovative Ontario-made green and clean technologies.

  • Neil Sentance, Assistant Deputy Minister, Ontario Public Service Green Office
